What is Affiliate Marketing?
Have you noticed that under the titles of all my articles I have a highlighted disclosure statement? It is a regulation of the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) to disclose that if I mention any service or item to which a cost is associated, I may generate income should the reader purchase said service or item. I do not produce, manage or sell any of the goods or services I might promote. Yet, I mention them and support their cause, all the while making a few cents for promoting items that belong to someone else. Affiliate marketing is a way to monetize a blog, a website, or an article of any kind. One would be hard-pressed to find any article on the web that does not include affiliate links of some kind.
Why be an Affiliate?
Should you own your own blog or website, affiliate marketing is a way to generate passive income. Many bloggers bypass this method of generating income for fear of “selling” to readers. I don’t see it that way. If my posts involve discussion of items I personally use and endorse, why not include a link to where it can be bought? That way others can hopefully experience the same as I.
The other great thing about it? It requires little time and management. Actually, you don’t even need a website if you only want to promote on social media! You just have to make sure you read the affiliate marketing rules and policies of each platform. I know what you’re thinking, it sounds super easy, so it must not really work. That’s when I realized, to do this the right way, I need to learn from someone who’s mastered it! Read on!
How do I Start?
I decided to blog because writing is my past time. Since I love to write stories, educate, entertain and talk about things I enjoy, why not share them with the cyber world? Then it finally dawned on me! I can do what I love, AND generate some income!
What do I promote?
Do you eat? What about reading books? Like to save money on bundle deals? Own a car? Enjoy cooking? You name it, anything can be promoted. The key is to find what company offers affiliates, where to sign up, and how to weigh the commission structure. Sounds easy, right? Here’s an example: If you are considering your options for a blog hosting site, I use and promote Bluehost. Using my link, you receive a discount to join and I receive a very small payment from Bluehost for sending you to them. It’s a win-win situation for both of us. When you do your research, you will find affiliate marketing opportunities in every niche imaginable.
Affiliate Marketing Training
Despite the concept of affiliate marketing is simple enough, there are of course techniques and tips for getting started. Just like with anything else, if you want to excel in this area, you should participate in quality training.
